Happy birthday to Senator Barbara Mikulsky! While serving on the Senate for 30 years as a Democratic representative for Maryland (1987-2017), Mikulsky was at the forefront of many feminist causes for the lawmakers themselves. Mikulski made a lot of progress in 1993; in addition to fighting for potty parity and being an instrumental figure in the installation of a restroom for female Senators, Mikulski–along with Carol Moseley Braun (D-Illinois)–defied the Senate’s sexist rule that female Senators had to wear skirts by wearing pants on the chamber floor. “Too big for her britches” doesn’t apply–at least she’s wearing them.
